Spotlight on Diamond Leaves: A Fabulous Needlepoint Stitch for Trees

Look no further than the Diamond Leaves needlepoint stitch if you have a forest or trees to stitch.

Here's why we love it:

  • You don't have to angle or direct it to make it look like foliage. The inherent shape and texture of the stitch provides a shrub-like effect.
  • It can be dressed up or down; stitch it all in one solid thread and you have congruent shrubbery. Stitch a central pillar in a contrasting color and you have tree trunks—we did this with the conifers in this Grand Teton National Park needlepoint kit...

  • And, if you want your trees or shrubs to look a little less manicured, the Diamond Leaves stitch is the perfect vehicle for a variegated thread.

What a versatile stitch! Plus it only looks difficult to stitch. Although stitched in two parts it's really quite easy. Here's a stitch chart for the Diamond Leaves needlepoint stitch.

Stitch all the darker blue diamonds, and then stitch the inner arrows.

And, here's a close-up so you can see how we have compensated with Tent stitches at the top of the trees and used a brown thread for the inner arrows to resemble trunks. See what a lovely textured pattern this stitch produces!

We hope you have fun with your version of this fun and effective needlepoint stitch for trees, shrubs, and forests.
