Five Fun Needlepoint Background Stitches

Stitches for large areas and backgrounds are some of the most-searched decorative needlepoint stitches. Here are some of our favorite, not-so-common needlepoint background stitches:

1. Double Brick Darning Pattern

This beauty ticks all the boxes:
  • fast to stitch (because some of the canvas is left "open")
  • pretty
  • easy
  • goes anywhere since it doesn't have a strong direction.

Here's how you make this simple darning pattern to fill your canvas background or large space.

2. Skip Cross Stitch

Richer and more luxurious than a Skip Tent stitch but just as pretty. Another easy needlepoint background stitch that goes anywhere—even small spaces. We like it because it forms a congruent pattern without a direction so it also looks great on clothing and landscape features.

3. Lollipops Stitch

We call this one lollipops but it probably has a more sophisticated name. This is a pretty pattern for walls and anywhere you have a large space to fill and want a fun and interesting stitch to fill it. Work this beauty in columns. It's a Scotch stitch balanced on top of five Tent stitches!

4. Diagonal Scotch Stitch

An oldie and a goodie! This decorative needlepoint stitch is on the diagonal but doesn't have a strong directional flow, so it works for most large and small spaces—a versatile stitch with a lovely overall texture.

5. Crossing Cashmere Open Stitch

An interesting open stitch that consists of Elongated Cashmere stitches that cross each other. It's a great choice for wallpaper and other backgrounds where you're looking for an overall pattern. It also works well on buildings.

Work this design in two parts: stitch the elongated cashmere stitch rows and then the columns.
