A Handy Needlepoint Technique For Stitching A Diagonal Line

In this post, we’ll share a simple but effective tip for stitching needlepoint lines that slope downward to the right.

Take the tapestry needle shown in this design as an example—it narrows gradually into a single line of stitches. When worked in Tent stitch, this kind of thin line can look stepped or broken rather than smooth.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to keep that clean line of Tent stitches while visually “joining” them together. This technique works for any needlepoint area that forms a single line of stitches sloping down and to the right.

To do it, start by laying down a foundational long stitch along the line. Then, stitch your Tent stitches directly over it. The long stitch provides a subtle guide and support, helping the Tent stitches read as one continuous, smooth line.
